So I’ve been spending a while looking at various Air / Flex based apps, and so far Destroy Flickr is standing out for me as it has manages to re-invent the UI for a very popular web based app, i.e. Flickr, duh, pretty well. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it, but after that it works fine.
DestroyFlickr explores alternative methods for viewing and sharing Flickr content. Its user interface provides an environment that benefits photos rather than hindering them. With the ability to look at a photo on a dark, neutral background, you can view it without the interference of a brighter surrounding. By using workspaces and canvases, DestroyFlickr is able to retain a constant history of where you have navigated, offering the ability to revisit an area without the need to reload the entire page. DestroyFlickr takes advantage of features provided by the Adobe AIR SDK that are unavailable to web-based RIAs. With the support of both drag and drop uploading and downloading, posting and saving photos is done in one easy motion. Now you can download the highest resolution version of a photo without having to see it first—just drag a thumbnail to the download menu and the download begins.

So uncharacteristicly I didn’t take a proper camera to Stream08, so here’s a nice set taken by Guido Van Nispen on his Leica.
If you want to make a shit load of money, say $100,000,000
1. Pick an established, multi billion dollar industry, say mobile telecoms
2. Come up with a disruptive idea (uh, yeah thats the really hard bit, however I don’t think you need to totally realise it in full, if the idea in itself is scary and convincing enough, and it gets out there, that’senough).
3. The idea will instil fear in the incumbents, i.e. scare the shit out of them because…
4. They get greedy due top the fact that your idea will hit their revenue in a major way…
5. So they will buy you to either a) shut you the fuck up or, b) take your revenue.
Easy. 5 Steps, kerching. Done.
Oh, I forgot to mention that last week I saw in person Pablos Holman gather credit and debit card data using an RFID scanner just by holding it near someone, scary. Get a foil hat for your card.
Last week I was lucky enough to spend a few days in Athens at Stream08, the annual WPP geek camp / un-conference. The idea is this: Get a mix of WPP people, add a few industry leaders form outside the group, throw in some random but clever people to spice it up, ban discussing or promoting your business directly, provide lots of stimulating entertainment and you have Stream.
It’s based on an un-conference structure so essentially I had no idea not what to expect, to be honest I wasn’t expecting much, but walked away feeling very luck indeed. I think it has to be the best gathering of its kind I have ever attended.
Highlights for me were a talk by Sung Park of UMagination Labs on how to innovate, a very frank and personal chat with Jeff Pulver about how fear, greed and disruption can be used to change an industry (and make a lot of money in the process), having a few drinks with Gordon Torr of The Unfactory, meeting Yosi Vardi (ICQ and a million others), watching a Lego Mindstorms robot that could do the rubicks cube in four minutes or so, being taught magic by Lior Manor, how to be a DJ by Darek Mazzone and finally, just having a few days to hang out with very smart, nice people.
He added: “In case you hadn’t already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you’re an idiot.”
So 2 things. 1 Dave Gorman has a new book / TV show / DVD out about crossing the US of A without using any hotel / store that’s part of a chain, nice. Serendipitously, an old colleague Dave, has just launcher v2 of UnchainedGuide.com a rather nice web site promoting, you guessed it, unchained stores / bars / restaurants etc. It’s still in it’s early stages as a few areas are still uncovered, like my hood, Walthamstow, so if you visit, be sure to nominate something.
Welcome to the unchained site for London. This site is where you’ll find the best independent shops in the city. All unchained shops are unique, one-offs. None of them are multinational chains, they’re owned and run by real people with a passion for what they sell. Have a look to find anything from the little hidden gems to first-of-a-kind, world-famous boutiques.

OK so Firefox has an infuriating bug / feature for all of you who surf grot in your spare time, in that when you clear you session history it doesn’t clear the address bar drop down. Here is a fix:
From what I can tell it is not a real bug but a regression that’s part of a new feature RichResults. The browsing history does not erase RichResults anymore. If you don’t want RichResults keep track of where you went, in Firefox you need to enter
about:config
and then scroll down to:
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
and change the default. The default setting is 12 and if you
want nothing, you enter 0.This probably should be changed to wishlist, namely that Clear Browsing history also clears RichResults.
